Earlier on Friday, Pro Football Talk had the story about the Arizona Cardinals firing defensive coordinator Clancy Pendergast. On paper, the move is surprising since the Cardinals made the Super Bowl and the defense forced a bunch of turnovers in the playoffs. However, the defense had some abysmal games during the regular season especially during the second half of the season.
Coach Whisenhunt obviously thought the defense underachieved this year. There’s a ton of talent on defense led by Karlos Dansby, Darnell Dockett, Bertrand Berry, Antonio Smith, and youngster Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie. Coach Whis inherited Pendergast so don’t be surprised to see him go back to his Pittsburgh roots and bring in a 3-4 Defensive Coordinator. They also need to bring back free agents Dansby and Smith.
Gambo and Ash of KTARtalked to Antonio Smith right after the firing of Pendergast. He didn’t see this coming.
“That’s a big shock to me. Never thought that could happen. It hit me way from left field.”
“I got a text today through the media. I have not spoken to anybody yet with the organization.”
