Man I Hate Lawyers!
February 13, 2009 – 12:15 pm by Jimmy ShapiroAge discrimination, racial discrimination, a hostile workplace and unlawful termination. Those are some of the claims toward the Clippers and owner Donald Sterling in Elgin Baylor’s lawsuit. Bill Plaschke of the LA Times has a good column on how there are no winners in this lawsuit.
There are so many questions I would ask both guys, but I don’t speak lawyer. That’s what it will ultimately come down to. Who hires the better lawyer or if Baylor is willing to a settlement. I’ve read many articles on Sterling and it’s a joke he’s still an owner in the NBA. I’ve always felt that leagues should have a right to force owners to sell their team if they’re consistently not putting a good product on the field/court/ice.
Mason and Ireland of ESPN Radio Los Angles talked to Alvin Pittman, who is one of Elgin Baylor’s lawyers.
John Ireland asked a legitimate question to Alvin Pittman , “Twenty-two years on the job, why didn’t he leave if he was in a hostile work environment and he was discriminated against racially?” Here was Pittman’s response:
“That’s asked in many discrimination situations. The fact of the matter, leaving isn’t always a reasonable alternative.”
The hosts and the lawyer got into a contentious discussion. I totally respect host Steve Mason for reeling in lawyer Alvin Pittman and telling him not to do his opening statement on the air. I’m not saying that Pittman and Baylor aren’t right, I just hate lawyers and how he just tried to dominate the interview instead of having a conversation.
I do agree with this statement from Pittman as the Clippers are the worst franchise in sports history:
“The position of general manager in Elgin’s hands was very different in terms of authority and latitude than in the hands of others.”
