stumbled across this today...

as a lifelong reds fan who has suffered through having this d-bag "patrolling" the outfield for us the last few years, i have to admit that the interview story doesn't really surprise me. ask the guys at 700 wlw how he treated them.

i have seats right on the right-field fence in cincinnati, so i got to watch last year's debacle up close. last year, toward the end of his days here in cincy, a fan in the stands made a comment about an opposing player who had just hit a homer the previous inning (i think it might have been uggla? can't remember...). the gist of the comment is "why don't you take him to [city x - whatever the trade rumor of the day was] with you". griffey responds "who says i'm going anywhere".

well, the fan and his buddy made a couple other pretty innocuous comments to him. they were followed, in order, by these three gestures by griffey over the course of the next two innings.

1) he "blew a kiss" to his own ass (the jesture was hands to the lips and then patting himself on the butt, it's hard to describe).

2) flipping the bird.

3) yelling into the right field stands (full of kids and god knows who else) - "why don't you shut the f- up".

and then after he went back to the dugout after telling the fans to "shut the f- up" there was an usher in our section escorting some fans away.

what a cry-baby. i feel sorry for the mariners fans.

[...] Settle Down Seattle, He’s Not The Griffey You Remember (via Deadspin): When I worked for KJR, the sports radio station in Seattle, we were always trying to get Griffey on the radio station, but to no avail…We kept asking him and he kept turning us down. So our Mariner’s [sic] sound guy decided to record his response to the interview request. The first day he cussed out the sound guy. The next day he said, ‘I’ll do an interview with KJR when you suck my big black motherf–kin cock.’ Sorry, tempting, but that didn’t happen. We replayed his first day’s response multiple times on the radio and the Mariners were furious. They threatened to pull all of our media credentials if we replayed another Griffey interview request response. Unfortunately, his fellatio request never made it to the airwaves. [...]
