Robert Sarver On Suns’ Decision To Keep Amare Stoudemire
February 20, 2009 – 12:43 am by Michael Bean
Most people expected Amare Stoudemire to be shipped out of Phoenix by the time the NBA Trading Deadline had come and gone. Didn’t happen. Amare will remain with the Suns for the remainder of the year. Is it because the Suns feel they have one more push left in them now that they’ve perhaps gotten a spark by replacing Terry Porter with Alvin Gentry as head coach earlier in the week? Let’s hear from Suns owner Robert Sarver himself. Phoenix’s majority owner talked to KTAR with Gambo and Ash on Thursday in an exclusive interview to discuss the rumor that the Suns were close to dealing both Shaq and Amare:
” I can’t really talk about the specifics about individual teams, but I will say we did have an opportunity to get quite a bit of financial relief with Shaq. And we had a lot of interest in Amare. But at the end of the day, our momentum has really shifted around and our fans really like what they see right now. And I like what we see. And we want to give our guys another chance to make a run at a Championship. Maybe that’s wishful thinking on my part. I don’t know. But I look at how the guys are playing and the pieces we have and we decided to go with what we got and we’ll figure out the financials next year.”
