From the first day he stepped on the football field for the Houston Texans, DeMeco Ryans has been one of the best middle linebackers in football. Mario Williams was the more acclaimed player and the first pick in the draft, but it was Ryans that won the NFL Defensive Player of the Year Award in 2006. He made the Pro Bowl in 2007 and is always on the field for the Texans’ defense.
Ryans joined KBME in Houston on Tuesday morning while playing a game of Madden with Morlon Greenwood. I enjoyed the interview, but the music KBME played in the background during the whole interview made it sound like a cheesy porno.
On Dunta Robinson getting the franchise tag:
“I’ve spoken with him and of course he wasn’t happy with the tag. Everyone knows, he was not expecting to have the tag and they told that they weren’t going to tag him. Of course he’s upset about it. He didn’t want to be franchised. It’s part of the business, something you have to deal with but at the same time it’s hard to go out there and participate when you’re upset at the guys upstairs.”
Ryans on getting a new contract for himself:
“We tried to get a deal done, but it wasn’t what I feel like I wanted. The contract talks just stalled on that end. We did talk about re-doing the contract, but we couldn’t agree on a number.”
“I’m looking to get a deal done before the season. I’m hoping to re-open talks and hash out all the grievances and get the deal done. This is where I want to be, I love Houston and I want a great deal that will lock me up in Houston.”
“I would focus on me. I feel like I played out the rookie contract two years ago. I would definitely be trying to focus on me and get me locked in.”
On losing Sage Rosenfels:
“It would be tough losing Sage. With Sage we knew we had a real, a true, a great backup quarterback in Sage. He could definitely step in and get the job done. When Matt went down, no one worried cause we knew Sage would step in and get the job done.”
