Brendan Jones, Meet Tiger Woods

February 26, 2009 – 6:01 am by Michael Bean

How would you like to be the guy awaiting Tiger Woods in the opening round of the WGC Accenture Match Play Championship, an event Tiger has historically dominated? That’s what little known Australian golfer Brendan Jones got to do Wednesday in Phoenix. Joness played decently, but Woods closed him out on the 16th hole with a short par putt that gave him a 3 and 2 victory. Jones gave an interesting interview to XTRA Sports 910 in Phoenix prior to his match with Woods.

On drawing Tiger in the first round:

“Obviously I thought what an opportunity this is, and then I thought to myself – you know I can’t really swear on the radio – but I thought Holy Cow. The eyes of the world are going to be upon me.”

Yes they were Brendan. And good for you. It was only 3 and 2.

On whether or not the format being match play favored him:

“If I have a 15 on the 1st and he has a 3, I’m only down 1 hole.”

Up next? The 32 seed in the tournament, Tim Clark.
