The New York Giants Lock Down Brandon Jacobs

February 26, 2009 – 1:23 pm by Michael Bean

No longer do fans of the New York Giants have to wonder if the organization was going to re-up bruising RB Brandon Jacobs to a long-term deal. They did so yesterday, signing Jacobs to a new 4-year deal that could pay him as much as $25 million dollars. At the very least, Jacobs will collect $13 million in guaranteed cash and will be in a Giants uniform in 2009 to help New York make another run at Super Bowl glory after bowing out in the Divisional Round this past year. Listen to Giants GM Jerry Reese on WFAN Thursday talk about the team’s ability to sign Jacobs to a long-term deal, which removed the franchise tag from the huge RB:

Responding to the ‘genius’ terms of the contract that Jacobs signed:

“We’re happy about it. But I think you’re using the term genius loosely there. Kevin Abrams does a really good job with us in that respect with contract negotiations. So we’ve been fortunate with contracts so far.”

On whether or not Jacobs’s signing means Derrick Ward is out in New York:

“Never say never with Derrick Ward. It’s not over. A lot of things can happen. You never know in free agency what can happen. It could happen today, or he could go out and the market may not be what he wants and he may be able to come back to us. We’ll just keep our hand available to play it either way.”

On the team’s plans when free agency starts at 12 am midnight Friday morning:

“You like to get things done quickly when free agency starts.  We have a game plan. We have a few guys we really like and want to get in here as soon as quickly as we can. And we’ll see if we can make that happen. As you know, when free agency starts, it’s like a frenzy for the first couple of days, then it cools off.  You’ll probably see some big deals come out early; then there will be a lull; then you’ll see a run on the second level guys.”
