Shawn Springs Talks About the Final Cut
February 28, 2009 – 7:30 am by Doug Farrar
Free agency isn’t just about the huge contracts given to players like Albert Haynesworth – it’s also about players getting cut so that teams can overpay for other players! Example? When the Redskins gave DeAngelo Hall a six-year deal with $23 million in guaranteed money, they also released veteran corner Shawn Springs, who had been with the team since 2004. Springs is getting up there and he only played in nine games in 2008, but the pride was still there when he talked to Doc Walker and Kevin Sheehan of The Locker Room on ESPN 980 in DC.
On his reaction to being back out there on the market:”
I said (to my agent), ‘Man, you called me this early to tell me that (laughs)? I said, ‘Man, you need to let me sleep in until 10:00 to give me that kind of information! No, you know how I am, Doc — hearing that they signed Haynesowrth for $100 million and D-Hall for $55 million … I was like, ‘Man, they gotta cut somebody — probably me!”
On whether he saw the cut coming:”
I wasn’t surprised at all … I’m excited that the Redskins are making moves to make them a better team. I talked to (head) coach (Jim) Zorn this morning, and I talked to (position coach) Jerry Gray, and I didn’t have any hard feelings. They gave me an opportunity to play in my hometown … and I just thanked them for the opportunity.”
