The Vikings Grab a Sage
February 28, 2009 – 6:30 am by Doug Farrar
On the occasion of his trade from the Texans to the Vikings for a fourth-round draft pick, quarterback Sage Rosenfels joined KFAN’s Dan Barreiro to talk about his new opportunities. The Vikings are a team with just about everything it takes to win a Super Bowl — dominant offensive line, the best running back in the game in Adrian Peterson, an unreal defensive line, and … a gaping hole at quarterback.
This was never more evident than in the Vikings’ 26-14 playoff loss to the Eagles on January 4. In that game, quarterback Tarvaris Jackson threw 15 completions in 35 attempts for 164 yards, no touchdowns, and one interception. And what makes Peterson just an amazing running back is the fact that the Vikings’ offense so often faces eight in the box, because nobody fears Minnesota quarterbacks. Can Rosenlfels be the guy to take the Vikings to the next level? He seems to think so…

On being given the opportunity to compete for a starting NFL job:
“I’m excited to come in and help this football team any way I can. It’s no secret that this is a good football team with a great running back, a great defense, and a lot of talent on the offensive line. And there’s a lot at the wide receiver position. So, just for the opportunity for a quarterback to compete for the starting job on this kind of football team is very exciting.”
On what he brings to the organization:
“I think I bring a vast knowledge of being around this league, you know, I’ve had a chance to sit and watch a lot of things occur — the way this game has evolved in the last seven or eight years. I have a really good knowledge of football, and I can’t wait to start figuring out the offense and how we’re going to attack the defenses. I think I bring a lot of intangibles — maybe they don’t show up at the Combine, you know, ‘How strong is his arm, what’s his 40 time?’ Things like that.”
The countdown for Tarvaris Jackson starts now — jobs are on the line, the NFC North looks like a creampuff division in 2009, and the Vikings have to hit the fast lane running. Maybe this does the trick? We can but wait and see…
