An Agent’s Perspective On His Client’s Free Agency

March 3, 2009 – 11:08 am by Jimmy Shapiro

He wasn’t nearly as good as Brian Dawkins, but in his prime Keith Brooking was pretty darn good.  He played in five straight Pro Bowls from 2001-2005 and was Atlanta through and through.  He played high school, college, and pro football in the Atlanta area.  Unfortunately, he also played in front of the worst professional sports fan in the whole country.  In terms of cities with all four professional sports teams, there’s no doubt that Atlanta has the worst fans.

Brooking was just signed to replace Zach Thomas on the Dallas Cowboys defense and they hope this veteran experiment goes better than Thomas.  Brooking’s agent Pat Dye Jr. joined Buck and Kincade on WCNN in Atlanta to talk about Brooking’s departure:

“They said in an ideal world for us, Keith will be back here but in a reduced role.  Not a reserve role, but a reduced role.  They felt that would serve him better as he got towards the end of the game and certainly as he got towards the end of the season in terms of being fresh.”

On Keith going to a new team:

“I think one of the overwhelming sentiments for Keith is one of relief because right or wrong, justifiably or not, he has been the lightning rod, the focal point for this defense’s success or lack of success.”

“I think he’s excited about being a piece of the puzzle rather than the puzzle itself.  He’s geniunely excited about just being one of the guys, just blending in.”

This was a real interesting interview to listen to as I never thought about sports from this perspective, but it sure makes sense.  I know the analogy is way off, but when I run my fantasy football league it isn’t particularly fun for me.  I’m dealing with collecting money, people bitching about this and that, and then general apathy when someone’s team sucks.  I enjoy my hoops league where I’m just a participant immensely more.
