Buckhalter the Bronco — All Faulked Up?
March 4, 2009 – 9:30 am by Doug Farrar
It got buried under the outrage of losing Brian Dawkins, but the Philadelphia Eagles lost another long time contributor to free agency — running back Correll Buckhalter, who signed a four-year deal with the Denver Broncos on February 27. Buckhalter is a bigger (6-0, 217) back who provided a change of pace for Brian Westbrook when he could stay healthy, and he’ll most likely be in a rotation in Denver with Peyton Hillis and whichever other scrubeenies the Broncos add to the squad. On Monday, Buckhalter joined The Sports Guys on Denver’s 104.3 The Fan to talk about what he brings to the team.
On whether the Jay Cutler drama was brought up when the Broncos were talking to Buckhalter:
“I didn’t even know about it … going through my deal, it was about what I could do for the team, and what they were going to have for me, That was pretty much it. Just the opportunity to get a lot more playing time.”
On how he’ll fit what will be a drastically overhauled roster — could he be the Kevin Faulk versa-back that new head coach Josh McDaniels had in New England?
“Oh, yeah. Absolutely. Coming from Philadelphia, we throw the ball a lot, and we had a good feel for running screens. Faulk does a great job on sceens, and getting open on third down and keeping the chains moving. Throughout my career in Philadelphia, I’ve been able to do that.”
I think they were getting their Faulks confused on that last question – -The Sports Guys were talking about Kevin, and Correll answered with Marshall. In any case, Buckhalter should be able to add that kind of versatility to a roster with a great deal of “what if?”
