Comedian Dave Attell Talks Leno, Crack, Shemales And More

He does stand up, other work on Comedy Central and HBO, and did you know he was one of the comedians most responsible for initially helping The Daily Show become the smash success that it is today?
Attell took his irreverent brand of comedy to the airwaves last Friday on KHTK in Sacramento. He talked about his upcoming gig in the area and shared some funny stories about this and that.
About getting a flat tire on his way to the KHTK studio:
“Me and Abe (his limousine driver for the day) who is taking me to the station. When we got out of the car and the guy pulled up, you could see the look in his eyes. Abe’s like 210, 250 [pounds] tattooed all over, wearing shorts. I look like I’m on a watch list for the Al Jazeera network. The guy was like ‘gulp.”
On what he thinks of the changes to late night shows like the Jay Leno and Conan O’Brien gigs:
“I’ll say this about late night shows – it is the hardest job in show business, because you got to do it night after night, every night they got to bring their A-game, they got to talk to a lot of these vapid young models. You know, like the Gossip Girl types who try to make their little stories interesting. So it’s really more difficult than it looks.”
“I personally don’t think 10 o’clock is the way to go. I mean, it’s too early. And it kind of sucks for Conan who I love his comedy and he’s always been really great to me. But that’s a lot of late night shows because think about it – you got Leno at 10, then Conan at 11:30 and then Jimmy Fallon. And then after that, if you still can’t go to bed then you’re on crack I guess.”
On some of his favorite places to perform overseas:
“Japan was cool and Brazil was probably the best one because there’s no laws there and there’s a lot of trannies and shemales and weird mythical creatures. Have you ever seen a tranny? I’d only heard of them. Now with the Slumdog [Millionaire] thing hitting Mubabi – that’s like the Pittsburgh of India by the way – I don’t know if you knew that.”
