Vonnie Holliday — No Longer a Dolphin

March 4, 2009 – 8:41 am by Doug Farrar

Miami Dolphins team president Bill Parcells has never been known as an old softie — the man has been the karmic re-embodiment of Vince Lombardi for the last 30 years, and he’s always had a strict policy: if you don’t like it, lump it. Take it down the road and dump it! Since he’s turned around every team he’s taken over, people tend to follow the Parcells doctrine, though it does tend to grind some people under the wheels.

The latest to fall away was defensive lineman Vonnie Holliday, who was reported as a salary cap cut upon his release on March 2. The ten-year veteran missed only four games in his four years in Miami, but the Dolphins were ready to move on. The next day, Holliday joined Big Dog on 560 WQAM in Miami to catch up on what happened.

On why he was released:

“I don’t know what the story is floating around out there, but there wasn’t much to get worked out. We were going in different directions, and that was it. A couple weeks back, my agents were called into a meeting — kind of expected but unexpected — and I was told that (the Dolphins) wanted me to take a pay cut. I was then informed that I should think about it, talk to Bill Parcells before he went to the Combine, and hash something out. It was more like, ‘We feel we have some young guys who can step in and do what you do, and we’re going in a different direction.’

“I totally understand the business, but I expected to retire a Dolphin, or at least be there another year. It was important for me and my agents to have a cap-friendly deal to avoid a situation like this, and we had a cap-friendly deal, but it just didn’t work out.”

Per Rotoworld, Holliday’s off to visit the Broncos and Lions.
