The Washington Huskies Are Regular Season Pac 10 Champions For The First Time In Over 50 Years

For the first time since 1953, the Washington Huskies men’s basketball team won an outright regular season conference championship in the Pac 10. Wow, I would have never guessed it had been that long. Congratulations to head coach Lorenzo Romar and to the seniors on the Huskies squad, most notably All-American candidate Jon Brockman, who’s average 14.8 points and 11.5 boards per game.

On being named Pac 10 Coach of the Year for the second time in his career:

“Well it should be named the coaching staff of the year award because people just don’t understand what a tremendous job [my assistants] have done. They’ve just been phenomenal, they’re really good. They’re winners.”

On the moment after the final horn sounded when Romar and his assistants shared a very emotional moment together on the sidelines:

“At that moment, it was a moment of congratulations to our staff. These guys have worked their tail off and have spent countless hours trying to make this team better. It was time to congratulate and to celebrate a group that did things as a team. There were no individuals this year. I happen to be the head coach, but I couldn’t have done it by myself.”

On if there will ever be a guy like Jon Brockman, who’s accomplished so much in his four years in Seattle:

“I don’t think there will be. There will be others that come along and they’ll be good rebounders. I don’t know if they’ll break his rebounding record, but they’ll be good rebounders. And there will be other players that come along and will be strong and physical but I don’t think I’ll ever coach a guy that will be your best player but yet is always trying to practice as if he’s earning his scholarship. A guy that is as unbelievable a servant as a leader. That’s why I wished he would have been Player of the Year in our conference, because the numbers, they don’t tell the whole story.”
