Pitt Has #1 Overall Seed In Their Sights

March 12, 2009 – 2:28 am by Michael Bean

When Pittsburgh took down Connecticut on Sunday 70-60, they all but assured themselves of a #1 seed in this year’s Big Dance. That is if they don’t stumble in the quarterfinal round of the Big East Tournament. Pittsburgh sports the nation’s top RPI, and was ranked #2 in this week’s AP and Coaches’ Poll. Blair, who was named Big East Co-Player of the Year (UCONN’s Hashim Thabeet) spent a few minutes earlier in the week to talk to ESPN Radio Pittsburgh about the big win on Sunday, what his team still wants to accomplish in this week’s Big East Tournament, where they are notoriously competitive, and of course, he and his teammates’ excitement to represent their school in the 2009 version of March Madness. Blair didn’t know it at the time, but his Panthers will face the Mountaineers of West Virginia Thursday night at Madison Square Garden.

On his senior teammate Levance Fields playing on Senior Day against the Huskies when nobody expected him to be healthy enough to go:

“Man, I knew he was playing. That’s Levance. He’s not sitting out [any] time. I knew he wasn’t sitting out. I mean I’ve been through the same thing – the tailbone, the groin and I wasn’t sitting out. I knew he was a little tough dude. I just kept playing with him like ‘you know if you sit out, I’m going to break your leg.’ So I knew he wasn’t sitting out. He was just doing it for show I guess.”
