The 6 OT Thriller – Hope You Didn’t Tivo The Game Like Me

March 13, 2009 – 9:44 am by Jimmy Shapiro

I’m going to try to make a long story short, but I doubt I can do it.  I’m a Syracuse grad and a die hard Cuse hoops fan.  My daughter even has a “Hello Otto” (Syracuse mascot) book.  Because I live on the West Coast and don’t want to get divorced just yet, when I watch all the Syracuse games I record them and watch a two hour game in just under an hour.  I’ve mastered the art of avoiding the score at all costs.

Last night, I recorded the game like normal because the boss made dinner plans and I added an extra hour to the recording for a total of 3 and a half hours.  Surely, that should be enough time for the game.  I started watching the game 90 minutes after tip-off.  By the time the recording ended, there was 14 seconds left in overtime and Syracuse was down two points.  I was so friggin’ mad that after watching the whole game I would miss the end. I raced downstairs to my computer to see the final score only to find out that the game was tied going into the third overtime.

So I missed the whole second overtime, but was able to watch the rest of the game live.  It’s one of those games where every Syracuse fan will remember where they were when they saw it.  I went to Facebook afterwards and everyone I was friends with from college had stayed up and wrote something about their experience of watching the game.

I honestly felt bad for the players watching the game.  They were playing on fumes.  I’m 100% convinced that Eric Devendorf fouled someone in the fourth overtime just so he could foul out and sit down.  The most amazing stat in the whole game for me was that Syracuse didn’t have one lead in any of the first five overtimes which meant they scored the last points in the first five overtimes.  Just sick.

I’m sure all the gamblers will load up on West Virginia and understandably so.  The Mountaineers opened up as a 2 1/2 point favorite and I’m guessing that will keep going up.  Syracuse will end up playing two games in one day and the only teams that do that are the Globetrotters and the Generals.

I searched every sports radio station and could only find one interview and it was with the PBP voice for Syracuse hoops.  Most guys are probably still sleeping.  Hopefully, I’ll be able to update this post with an interview or two from some of the participants. (Update, here’s an interview with former Syracuse legend Gerry McNamara on The Dan Patrick Show. G-Mac was in the front row last night.)

In the meantime here’s some video reaction from the Syracuse players and assistant coach Mike Hopkins.  Thanks to Syracuse Post-Standard for the video.  It’s funny to hear guys screaming in the background. There are a few NSFW words in the locker room audio.

Eight Reactions From SU’s Six Overtime Win

There’s also some funny audio of the Syracuse and UConn PBP guys calling the six overtimes. Audio is at a high speed pace and put together by the Dan Patrick Show. Thanks to the fellas over there for the audio.

Not so fast Eric. Syracuse celebrating after they thought Devendorf's shot at the end of regulation was good.
