Mike McCarthy Better Have The Packers Back In Contention In 2009

Was there a bigger disappointment in the National Football League in 2008 than the Green Bay Packers? Maybe, but not many if so. Just a year removed from a first round bye in the playoffs, the Packers stumbled to a 6-10 record after losing five in a row at one point during the 2nd half of the season. Injuries flat out don’t cut it as an excuse in this league, but in McCarthy’s and Green Bay’s defense, the Packers were breaking in a first-year starter at QB in Aaron Rodgers. But he wasn’t really the problem as much as the defense was. In 2007, the Packers gave up just 291 points (6th best). In 2008, that number ballooned to 380 (22nd). McCarthy joined 1070 The Fan in Indianapolis to talk about the owners meetings out in California.
On what exactly he hopes to accomplish while attending the meetings:
“Well I go back to my first year and it’s no different again this year – it’s very informative. You’re around a lot of very bright people, a lot of creative minds, there’s a lot of opinions that are thrown around the room. So it’s just an opportunity to learn. I take a lot of notes on just about everything and anything. Because you’re always looking to improve as an individual, and more importantly, improve your team and improve your organization.”
