Mark Tex Talks About Jeter, ARod and Playing Third Base
March 30, 2009 – 9:45 am by Will Brinson
Mark Teixeira finds himself suddenly at the center of many controversies. First of all, he’s in New York, playing for the Yankees, and that’s a circus in and of itself. Secondly, he’s the team’s go-to for power with Alex Rodriguez having elected to have surgery, steroid scandal notwithstanding. But in a recent interview with WFAN — the primary purpose of which seemed to be pimping Yahoo! Fantasy Sports — Tex was as cool as the other side of the pillow a cucumber something that’s cool without being an annoying analogy.
On the number one overall fantasy pick between Hanley Ramirez, Albert Pujols and Jose Reyes:
“…of those three guys … I’m pretty sure stolen bases are huge in fantasy baseball, so, uh, of those three guys, I’d say Hanley Ramirez with the stolen bases and the power, he’s gonna score a lot of runs … Yahoo fantasy sports has him number one, so I’d go with Hanley.”
On the possibility of playing third base(!)
“The goal is to win a World Series and to win as many games as possible. And, uh, me as a third baseman, I don’t think that would work into that plan. So we’re gonna keep me over at first and I think that’s definitely safe for the team and for me.”
On whether Derek Jeter should lead off or not:
“I think that DJ or Johnny can hit the leadoff spot or hit two … whatever’s gonna work out the best, maybe matchups, how a guy’s swinging the bat … whether Johnny or DJ leads off I think we’re going to have a great team …”
On his first impressions of being in New York:
“It’s been great … people try to tell you that it’s tough and that you’re gonna have to do this and this … I love talking to the media, I love talking baseball … I try to keep my nose clean and staying off the back page …”
