Nick Price Discusses PGA Money, Making More in His Career Than Jack, And Augusta

April 8, 2009 – 7:34 am by Will Brinson

Nick Price was a great golfer in his day, amassing 43 career wins and three major titles, in addition to being named the PGA Player of the Year in 1993 and 1994, as well as leading the tour in earnings during both those years. Clearly, a very good/great golfer.

But Jack Nicklaus he was not. (Of course, who actually is/was, right?) But he has an excellent point in the following interview: money earned over a career doesn’t really matter all that much. Price also talks about life on the Senior Tour, the best holes at Augusta and Tiger Woods coming on strong just in time for the Masters this year.

On the amount of money being thrown around in the PGA

“I think what you need to look at more, as opposed to looking at the amount of money these guys are making, is look at how many career wins they had because that gives you a better indication of how good of a player they were. I made three times as much as Jack Nicklaus; now that’s criminal because he’s won 72 tournaments and I’ve only won 18. I’ve won a quarter of what he won and won three times as much money.”

On Tiger Woods

“He’s kind of having everything his own way at the moment. He’s just going to get stronger and stronger over the next three or four months and he may win all four majors again this year, who knows…[We always said] God never gave every golfer every department, but he did with Tiger…His ability to focus is something I’ve never seen before…The guy just seizes to amaze me; he has the discipline that I have never seen in a player before, maybe Jack Nicholson.”

On his favorite holes at Augusta

“There is nothing more beautiful than playing the 11th, 12th and 13th at Augusta with the flowers, these beautiful pine trees, you got the creek that runs through there. I try to explain to my friends, it’s like playing golf in a botanical garden. It’s the most beautiful place to play.”

On the Senior Tour

“The biggest difference between the PGA Tour and the Champion’s Tour is on Friday, when we’ve all finished playing, instead of all running to the workout trailers, we all go into the Men’s Grill and have vodka tonics or beer.”
