Brian Westbrook Is Good With Chad Johnson Joining Philly
April 9, 2009 – 10:35 am by Tas MelasIf any Philadelphia Eagles word means something, it’s the word of Brian Westbrook. He has been a rock for the franchise. Despite being overlooked and underpaid over the years, Westbrook has always been the team’s #1 play-maker. He may not get a lot of pub, but I’m sure he is very well respected in the Eagles’ locker room. Many fans will forget about him when naming the league’s top backs, but they’ll be forced to recall him as one of the top dogs as Sundays pass. All the rage coming from the mouths of Philly fans are hopes of acquiring a top-flight receiver – and, there’s been a lot of it, mainly because these are Philly fans we’re talking about. The names of Chad Johnson, Anquan Boldin, and Plaxico Burress have come up over and over. Brian Westbrook joined Colin Cowherd on ESPN Radio to discuss if Johnson would be welcome and if he would help the team. Westbrook also gets into McNabb’s legacy in Philly and if the Eagles’ run is all but dead.
On whether or not Chad would help:
“I feel really strong about his abilities; Chad has done so many good things in Cincinnati, it would be a great addition if we could add him. I truly feel strong about those guys that we have here. Those guys, they’ve done a great job really supplying plays, making plays down the field, and blocking down the field as well. If you can an add a talented guy like Chad, basically all it can do is increase what we have here.”
On his team being able to handle another volatile receiver:
“I haven’t been around Chad that much to be able to say that it would be a problem. I think that Coach Reid and his staff do a great job of controlling those types of things. Of course, the T.O. (Terrell Owens) situation got out of control a little bit. In all actuality, I think Coach Reid and his staff did a great job of handling that situation. We also have the players on this team that can handle that situation as well, and hopefully, if we add something like that, it wouldn’t be an issue at all.”
Westbrook on if the Eagles run is coming to an end, Donovan McNabb, and the full interview after the break.
On the Eagles’ run coming to an end:
“I don’t believe that our window’s getting shorter. People said that after our Super Bowl run that our window was closed and we were right back in the playoffs a couple years later. We made it to the NFC Championship game this past year… So, I think if you have a talented core of guys on your team that can make it happen, your window really never closes. Hopefully, in our getting older years, we will continue to get better, and we will continue to make plays.”
His take on Donovan McNabb’s career:
“He’s been a leader, he’s been a great quarterback, a Pro Bowl quarterback. He’s been a great guy, as well as a great player. To me, as a player on this team, he’s lived up to all expectations I could possibly have of him. I think sometimes people want him to be someone else. He’s just done a great job of leading this team. It’s not easy to win Super Bowls. It’s not easy to make the playoffs. I think sometimes expectations are too high.”
