Gary Kubiak on the 2009 Houston Texans Schedule

April 15, 2009 – 6:30 am by Will Brinson

Gary Kubiak has the unfortunate distinction of being the Houston Texans’ head coach. That’s not to discredit the Texans team — they’re quite good and I’m actually a secret fan (blame it on Mario Williams). But the AFC South is always a really difficult division to play in … and that’s before natural disasters wipe out home games, like last year.

As a result, whenever the Texans schedule drops, you have to imagine that Kubiak is pretty interested in what kind of shake-out Houston gets in. Especially so this year, when a lot of folks kind-of/sort-of thought the NFL might give them a “bonus” for suffering through serious problems last year. Kubiak got on the horn with KILT in Houston to talk about this year’s schedule

On being pleased about opening at home:

“Honestly, I was a little surprised, usually we’ll go 2 years at home, 2 years on the road throughout my time in the league. I think my first two years here we opened at home and last year of course we opened on the road, but you know it’s nice to have 3 of those first 4 at home after what we went through last year.”

On it being nice to see division games later:

“Well, one of the things, we have a big stretch of division games. We go from November 8 until December 6 we play four in a row with the bye sandwiched in there. But, uh, I think you and everyone else knows we have to get better in our division to make the playoffs. And we’re going to find out – bottom line is we’re going to have to play well.”

On Monday Night Football against the Titans:

“Well, first off, I’m glad our city gets another chance on MNF. I said last year that you have to earn those opportunities and the league gave us a chance last year and our players played well and we get another chance this year against a great Titans team. You know we do get a big rest in between that Indianapolis game and that game and we’ll have to sit down and figure out how to use that time.”

On playing New England in the final week and playoff implications:

“Well, you’re exactly right – they’ve got to be one of the most successful organizations in the last 10 years, if not the most successful. So hopefully that will be a big, big game for both football teams, but we’ve got a lot of work to do between now and then.”
