Aaron Curry on the Lions, the Draft and Bringing a Child With Him to New York
April 21, 2009 – 9:15 am by Will Brinson
Aaron Curry is not Mark Sanchez. I say that not to belittle the former USC quarterback, but simply to make sure that everyone understands how humble and grounded Curry actually is — playing in Winston-Salem for four years will do that to you.
Of course, having to root for NC State will do it too, but that’s an entirely different story. Curry’s considered the “safe” option in this year’s draft, mainly because everyone knows that he might not be a superstar, but he will be very good and he will most certainly not steal cars or shoot himself in the leg anytime soon. The point of all this is to say that when you listen to Curry on Scott Van Pelt and Mike Tirico’s show, you will also be impressed, especially when you find out that he’s bringing a young leukemia survivor to New York with him.
On negotiations with the Lions:
“Well, you know, lately, ever since my final visit I’ve been trying to think about everything BUT the NFL Draft … It was just interesting and very exciting to know that they wanted to sit down and talk with my agents.”
On the Lions’ interest:
“Nah, they usually don’t allow me to know how interested teams are. They want me to stay grounded and stay humble, which is not hard for me to do. But they just said the meeting went well and we’ll know whenever they make a decision.”
On what suit he’s wearing:
“Well, you know, I haven’t seen it yet. I use a custom clothing company called Alaiza … Nah, it won’t be anything crazy or anything bright. I’m pretty sure it’s something traditional and I think I’m going with the Wake Forest black and gold.”
On taking a young child with him to New York:
“One goal was to be in New York and I was speaking with my agent and I told him I wanted to do something special, something unique, but I didn’t want it to be the Aaron Curry Show. And I wanted to start my career off by giving back to the community. So he had the idea of the St. Jude’s Children Hospital and he was giving me some advice and some opinions, so I decided to go pick a child and allow them to experience my personal experience. And I went down to Memphis last Monday and we had already picked Bryson but he didn’t know it yet and he was giving me a tour of the St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital and I just popped the question on him … [Reaction question] He was excited, wide eyes, smile from ear-to-ear, just happy to be able to experience the opportunity. The whole idea is to help Bryson raise awareness of leukemia … and to give the children hope throughout the year.”
