The Safest Pick In The Draft: Aaron Curry

April 27, 2009 – 9:45 am by Jimmy Shapiro

The Seattle Seahawks weren’t your normal team with the fourth overall pick in the draft.  They don’t have any glaring weaknesses and were a perennial playoff team until injuries, a unique coaching situation, and other intangibles caused them to implode last year.  After trading Julian Peterson, linebacker did become an area of need and the Hawks were fortunate that Curry landed in their lap.  Mel Kiper had Curry rated as the top player on his draft board.  Now the Hawks should go out and sign Derrick Brooks to help mentor this kid.

Curry joined KJR in Seattle following his selection by the Seahawks on Saturday.

On what his scouting report would say about himself:

“I think the first thing that would be on the list in bold print would be very relentless. Relentless for every play, every snap. Sheds blocks well, runs well from sideline to sideline, makes impact plays and is very disruptive.”

On what he would like to improve:

“I really want to improve on taking better angles in my pursuit. Sometimes I just get to the point where I’m just trying to be so relentless, I forget about small things like what angle I’m taking so I’m definitely going to work on that.”

On how he improved so much in the past year:

“That 3rd round [scouting] grade was very motivating for me to just come back and really destroy college football. It really elevated my game, from the workouts, from all the extra cardio from all the extra film, from sneaking into the defensive staff meeting room just to see how they breakdown opposing offense…A lot of small things from eating better to going out on Saturdays and playing full speed and every snap like it was my last.”

On what he knows about Seattle:

“The greatest fan support in all of the NFL. I don’t know much about the environment. A lot of people tell me that there are some beautiful days as far as weather and there are some rainy days.”
