Alex Mack Joins The Cleveland Browns
April 30, 2009 – 11:33 am by Michael Bean
If you are Alex Mack, are you upset that you went higher in the 2009 NFL Draft than anybody thought you might? A whole bunch of mock drafts had Mack being drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers at #32 for example. But in a move that can’t exactly be described as a shocker, but nevertheless a bit of a surprise, the Cleveland Browns drafted the California Golden Bears C at #21. Mack joined WKNR in Cleveland to talk about joining the once proud franchise.
On whether he was surprised he went as high as he did at #21:
“I was very surprised. It was a very good weekend, it ranks up there with the best of my life. It turned out to be really exciting that they traded down to get me so high, so I was fired up.”
On if it is true that new coach Eric Mangini administered tests to Mack and other potential draft picks:
“Yeah they didn’t waste any time getting to see how we handled pressure. We came in there and the first that that happened was [offensive line] Coach Warhop got on the board and taught me a couple of plays and went over what their O-line calls are. And they I had to go meet with [offensive coordinator] Coach Daboll and he got me on the film a little bit and we talked a bit personally. And then I had to go back to Coach Warhop and he had a test for me to fill out. So yeah, they distracted me a little bit to see how much I retained and what I remembered so it was interesting.”
