Larry Bowa Isn’t Shocked By Anything That Happens In Baseball Anymore

May 7, 2009 – 1:40 pm by Will Brinson

Larry Bowa, in his capacity as a Dodgers coach, spends lots of time with Manny Ramirez. As such, even though Larry is ostensibly insane, it made sense to talk with him immediately following the news that Manny would be suspended for 50 games because of PEDs.

And that’s what Colin Cowherd did on ESPN Radio; while Bowa’s answers aren’t totally shocking, they are fascinating, because they shed a light on what kind of person Manny has been since joining the Dodgers.

On his immediate reaction:

“I came across the screen and did a double take. I’m just very disappointed. But right now, with baseball, the way stuff is happening, nothing shocks me. I’ve been in the game too long now.”

On a “pit in his stomach” and how it effects the team:

“Yeah, there was a pit in my stomach because obviously the way we’re playing right now on the field. But on the other hand, it’s time for some of our younger guys to grow up right now. There’s not going to be a crutch there for 50 games so they’ve got to go out there and play. They’re getting in their prime years … Manny’s been a big influence on them and I think it’s going to be a challenge for them. Maybe they’re tired of hearing that the Dodgers are winning because of Manny.”

On Manny being embraced:

“I think knowing this club and the way Manny has these kids believing in themselves, he’ll be welcomed back with open arms. They’ll be disappointed, obviously, but he’ll do his 50 games – I think a lot of guys are really going to be watching television to see what he tested positive for. That’s gonna be a big deal …”

On talking with Manny soon:

“I get a feeling – and this is just speculation – I get the feeling that he might be there today and say something to the ball club. I could be wrong, but I get a feeling he might be there.”

Is Manny a leader?

“Without a doubt. Big time. In his own way. When he’s having these little meetings with guys in the clubhouse, he’s always talking baseball.”
