Scott Carroll Suspended For Using The Same Drug As Manny Ramirez
May 11, 2009 – 11:20 am by Tas MelasHere’s your stat of the day: 63 suspensions have been issued this year under baseball’s minor league drug program and only two under the major league program. Fishy, yes? Or, are there different stipulations between minor and major leaguers? Like, different laws for minors and a different set of rules for adults. Or, maybe this means major leaguers grow up and conduct themselves properly. Or, is the wool still in front of our eyes? Reds’ minor leaguer, Scott Caroll, received 50-games for taking HCG, the same drug Manny has been suspended for. Caroll was on The Dan Patrick Show to discuss when he first found out he tested positive, what he’s doing to fight the suspension, and what he would ask Manny if he had the chance.
What he did when he heard he tested positive:
“[...] It was the minor league training coordinator, he called me on the phone and told me I had tested positive for a banned substance called Human Chorionic Gonadotropin, and I said, ‘Excuse me? What?’ And, I was just baffled. He didn’t even know what it was at the time – he had to google it… It was just a jaw-dropper, I had no clue what it was… I just had to sit down and collect my thoughts ’cause I was just stunned.”
What he’s doing to fight the suspension:
“Me and my agent… We’ve taken it the farthest anyone’s ever taken it – if I’m not mistaken my appeal is sitting on the desk of Bud Selig right now. And, we’ve used all of our appeals and all of our avenues… I’m willing to do anything, try and prove my innocence as much as possible.”
When he found out Manny had been suspended for using the same steroid:
“I had heard that he had tested positive, and then my dad called me and said, ‘Hey, Scott, did you know that they were talking about Manny on the TV right now… He tested positive for HCG just like you.’ And, then I obviously became more interested because other then my doctors and stuff, there was really no one who knew more about HCG than I did. So, it was kinda, it was pretty funny.”
What he would ask Manny if he had the chance to talk to him:
“First off, I’d wanna know was it a prescription a doctor gave him? Was he having any health problems? Is it something that he felt really helped benefited him? Did he think about other people when he was doing this? There are a lot of things I’d ask him.”
