Steve Smith Just Makes Plays

May 12, 2009 – 1:00 pm by Michael Bean

Remember on the old version of NFL Primetime when Tom Jackson would say ‘All he does is catch TD passes!’ about Chris Carter? Well, all Steve Smith does is make amazing plays. Had Panthers QB Jake Delhomme not totally crap the bed in last year’s Divisional Round loss to the Arizona Cardinals, Steve Smith maybe would have gotten to take his amazing abilities to a larger national audience. Last year, the All Pro had 1,421 receiving yards in just 14 games last year. The 101.5 yards per game were an NFL best, a first for the 4-time Pro Bowler. Steve Smith joined WFNZ in Charlotte to talk about his and his team’s summer plans:

Being that it’s close to Smith’s 30th birthday, he was asked how long he thinks he’ll be playing:

“I’m not sure. You know, what I’ve been doing now in my offseason, it’s up in the air. I doubt I’ll be playing when I’m 40. Probably when I’m 40 I’ll be sitting in some beach in a different country.”

On what he thinks of the Panthers’ offseason moves:

“I’ve kind of been doing my own thing. You know, I work out on my own and I’ve been doing a little traveling. So, I’ve been kind of coming in and out when I need to be. I’ve just been kind of staying out of the way and letting myself re-energize. You know that last game was kind of hard for the whole team. So I’ve just been concentrating on working out, staying focused and get ready for the season while trying to not let too much with what’s happening or what’s not happening with players to get me out of focus.”
