Michael Irvin Talks Terrell Owens, Rookie Wideouts

May 14, 2009 – 9:00 am by Will Brinson

No one knows talent and ego and Cowboys wide receivers quite like Michael Irvin, which makes him the perfect person to talk about Terrell Owens.

He’s also a perfect person to discuss how rookie wide receivers can make an impact — and he got on the horn with WFAN to talk about Terrell Owens’ departure from Dallas, the impact of rooks in the L, and to sling funny one liners about the Raiders’ draft. He also pimps his new reality show, should you be interested in that.

On how hard it is for rookies to have an immediate impact:

“It is usually tough, because the game is played at such a difference pace. In college maybe you reach one or two games with a tough cornerback … every week you have a tough corner in this league. You could be two yards back of a DB in college — they call that wide open; the DB will be hanging on you like the back of your jersey in this league.”

On being surprised by Darrius Heyward-Bey’s selection as the 1st overall wideout:

“Can you even say ‘surprised’?”

On being happy that Terrell Owens is gone:

“I’m never happy getting rid of talent, that’s for sure, but I certainly understand the importance of team chemistry. Because if you’re not a team — and I say to win a Super Bowl you have to be a ‘football family’ — I think you’re dead in the water.”

  6. This phony Michael Irvin has a lot of gall to talk about T.O.This nickel and dime cocaine sniffer ,white trash skirt chaser, was probably loaded everytime he came out to play.I think he was fired from ESPNH because everytime they put the camera on him he could”nt keep his eyes open. How much money he payed the sportswritters to vote him and the other coke sniffer LT nobody will ever know.Look at yourself before you slam another black reciever that could run circles around you(that is when you were”nt loaded)If the league would have tested him after every game,he would have been gone a long time ago.

  7. I think the “title” of this article is misleading. It infers that Michael Irvin –(who is a good friend of Terrell, and has often spoke of TO’s “greatness”) — said Cowboys were right to “DUMP” Terrell Owens. Irvin said no such thing. He was referring to the chemistry of the team, and not that it was Terrell’s fault the chemistry was “off”. It could very well be the giddy, big blonde chaser, Romo that has been the weak link in the chain. AND/OR the Coach, Wade Phillips. Many factors went into the Cowboys downslide, the LEAST of which was Terrell Owens.

Irvin’s remarks are deliberately misconstrued in the headline of the article. Certainly Michael never used the word “dump”. Sports media, both tv, internet, and print, are turning into Entertainment Tonight, The National Enquirer…. Always stirring up through inuendo and mis information.

  8. This is for all of you Dallas Cowboy lovers that think so much about Coke(MI),you guys must have been sitting next to him snorting to.

  10. Irvin is a big part of crazy quotes and outdoing the next guy. TO is just doing what Irvin put on the plate as acceptable. TO doesn’t take drugs, he is just having fun and playing the game(the whole game). On top of that he is good, probably the best in the game right now.

  11. What is phony about the title? We didn’t imply anything on the site other than that Michael Irvin talks about TO and rookie wideouts. How that’s misleading is beyond me.

  12. ok I for one was upset they let TO go. I think he has great talent and great abs (yeah baby) I have always and will always be a cowboys fan and I never really was a fan of TO till he was a cowboy. now they are forcing me to watch the Bills games too… lol only cuz I will miss TO I think he is great and I am a happily married woman with two children.. my hubby is also a cowboys fan my son is 13 and a colts fan and my daughter is 11 and is cheering for anyone but the cowboys (cuz she loves to get to her mother) GO Cowboys hope you play the super bowl in the new stadium but I hope TO out does everyones records… cya

  13. This is coming from michael Irvin! Mr. drug use all throughout is playing days? The cowboys put up with him than and he messed up the chemistry with his drug use and getting arrested several times which TO never did, but he is the first to say something. He needs to get a grip on reality.

By MarQuis on May 16, 2009

  14. I agree that this could be completely misleading. He never specifically states that TO was the problem and certainly didn’t say anything about dumping him. Typical media embellishment and liberty taking with peoples quotes. Also, maybe Irvin was on drugs and maybe he still is, but does that mean he’s not entitled to an opinion? Like him or not, the man was critical to the success of the Boys. He was a true gamer.
As for TO, his talent is definitely slipping. No doubt about it! He is not even close to being “one of the best” and his constant nagging and tendency to cause dissent when he didn’t get the ball forced into him was detrimental to the team.

  15. Why does ANYONE pay attention to this man? Irvin is a convicted drug criminal who should be laughed at instead of listened too. All I see is his ugly face flapping his gums on t.v………a real clown!

  16. loving TO – I agree about T.O. — I live in Eagles territory — city of Brotherly bashing — and TO was the BEST thing that ever came here. It was like superman arrived. He was so great, it was the happiest year ever for me. I was very upset with the breakdown over the contract problem, and the way the Eagles organization handled it. They always try to screw their players if they can. No wonder that dweeb, Jeffrey Lurie, was so happy when he signed Terrell. He knew he was getting a steal! Owens is the BEST WR I ever saw play the game, including Jerry Rice, because Rice had Montana. Can you imagine if Owens had Montana in his heyday? He would have blown away the record books.
If Terrell is declining at all, it’s because of how hard he works every year to be in tiptop shape, and how hard he works to help his teams win. It’s boring without Terrell Owens. I will be checking all Buffalo games this year.
I was under the impression Michael Irvin acknowledged Owens’ great talent. I remember him defending Terrell a few times. Either way Terrell’s numbers right now EXCEED Irvin’s who was just put in the Hall of Fame.
Terrell is the WR Superstar of the NFL for past decade at least. Many Eagles fans, like myself, will never forget the year of Camelot when Terrell Owens was here. We love Owens.

  17. Does any body really care what this dopehead lowlife idiot has to say about anything

By rozzzzz on May 17, 2009

  18. All I can say is you know nothing about a team and what it takes to win a superbowl. The boys would of never one those superbowls in the 90′s with Owens, he is more trouble than he is worth I would take Michael any day over T O and so would of Jimmy Johnson. And dont turn it into a black bashing thing thats just stupid.
