Chauncey Billups In Familar Territory With 7th Straight Conference Finals Appearance
May 18, 2009 – 8:15 am by Lance ZimmermanLucky number 7 or at least the fans in Denver are hoping so. Chauncey Billups has been to seven conference final series in a row now that his Nuggets have disposed of the Dallas Mavericks.
Chauncey has been the catalyst on the court for the Nuggets through this playoff run. He’s George Karl’s rebirth of Gary Payton, but with better scoring ability. Thus far in the playoffs Billups is averaging over 22 points a game, over 7 assists, and over a steal a game. While Carmelo still remains the main scoring option, the rock runs through Billups on the offensive end of the court.
Chauncey Billups joined 104.3 The Fan in Denveron Friday (before he knew the Nuggets were playing the Lakers) to discuss the playoffs thus far, the fans in Dallas, and all things Nuggets.
On the mentality of the team doing what it was supposed to in reaching the West Finals:
“When you get home court, you’ve got to expect to win. When you work that hard to get home court man, whether its first round, second round, you’ve got to expect to win. I think this whole city really wanted us, hoped we would win, but it really wasn’t expected for us to get where we’re at. I think the guys in the locker room, we expected to be where we’re at now. I’m not being cocky or arrogant, but we put a lot of work into it to get to this point.”
Chauncey was asked if he watches the playoffs on T.V. as a fan, or as a scout:
“I’m scouting man. I’m definitely scouting. Even teams we probably weren’t going to be playing against I watched them as in terms of what can we do to be successful against whatever team it is.”
On the fan behavior down in Dallas and if it was a distraction:
“It was a distraction. You’ve got people traveling, you’ve got your family traveling to come support you and when you know you only got your family and the everyone else on the team’s family out of the whole 20,000 in the building, that’s all you got. You want them to be safe and have a good time. Fans are going to be fans but you can’t cross that line and make it an uncomfortable situation for the players.”
