49ers GM Scott McLoughlan Shoots Down Plaxico Burress Rumors

Where oh where will former Pittsburgh Steelers and New York Giants WR Plaxico Burress end up playing? For a moment, it appeared that the San Francisco 49ers were a viable candidate. Made sense in a way, even though they did spent their first round draft pick on WR Michael Crabtree. 49ers GM Scott McLoughlan was on KNBR in San Francisco Wednesday to put a rest to that speculation – at least for the time being anyway.
Who would he start today: Stafford or Sanchez?
“I’d probably say Stafford just from the standpoint of experience as a starter. I think Sanchez has tremendous upside but I also think, from a quarterback standpoint, it’s a lot about experience and seeing things from behind center. It wasn’t his fault he was only a one-year starter, he had good talent in front of him. But I think you go with Stafford because he’s more ready for the pro style.”
What he would have done differently in the draft
“If I would have known this: in the first four years on the job, Scott, you’re going to have four different offensive coordinators, I wouldn’t have taken a quarterback with the first pick…It’s not making excuses for Alex whatsoever…but that plays into it.’
On wide receivers:
“I finally gave up on was Anquan Boldin because he couldn’t run a good 40 and sounded like a dang elephant coming down the track when I timed him 3 different times. It goes to show he has the “it” factor, meaning he has a unique characteristic to his game that makes him exceptional. It could be toughness, it could be speed, it could be quickness; but if you can find that and you can find a guy that’s a competitive guy that wants the ball on 3rd downs and wants to make the big play, then you have something.”
On the rumor that they are going after Plaxico Burress
“There’s no truth to that. As a matter of fact, we’re sitting right now as every team is and feeling pretty good about our roster…We feel pretty good about our receiver depth right now.”
On Shaun Hill
“The thing I respect about him is he’s an overachiever and the players respect him because the guy goes out there each day and competes his butt off. That’s all you can ask for. Is he the most gifted guy? No, but he’s proven he can win at the NFL level and that’s huge.
