Bills Hall of Famer Jim Kelly On Terrell Owens and The Bills

With the Jay Cutler saga, the NFL Draft, and Michael Vick’s story, T.O’s been out of the news lately this offseason. Most people would say thank God for that. That will change this fall when the lights go on on the gridiron once more though. No doubt about that. Buffalo Bills former qb Jim Kelly joined WGR in Buffalo to talk about how Owens has been received by his teammates and the city there thus far.

On the reception given to Terrell Owens in Buffalo:

“Well, that’s good.  It just shows that the fans of Buffalo are excited.  They want a winner, and if this is one of the key components to us turning this football franchise around, more power to him.  At least it’s getting people exciting around here, I know they haven’t had that in many years and it’s good to see, and hopefully that not only shows T.O. that the people around here care about their franchise, about their football team, but lets the other players understand that this might be one of the guys we’ve been missing, and hey, you never know.  With a receiver like that you hope everything works out and hopefully that will be the stepping stone to some great things, and I know that, especially myself too, nobody’s going to accept not making the playoffs this year.  So that should be one of the keys.  Yeah, you can talk about Super Bowls, you can talk about whatever, but for us let’s just focus on one think and that’s making the playoffs.”

On expectations for the Bills this year:

“I’ll put it this way — if the team doesn’t make the playoffs you’re gonna see a lot of major, major changes.  I’m sure you’re gonna see that.  That goes without saying.  When you give the coaching staff one year, you give Terrell Owens one year, you know that Mr. Wilson is not gonna sit back and allow this to happen very much longer before he starts making changes.  I hope it works out, because I’ve said this so many times over and over again, that I love Dick Jauron, I love what he means, but he’s so loyal to his assistants that sometimes the assistants gotta step up too, and hopefully that’ll all turn around and we’ll get this team going in the right direction.”

On his reaction if the Bills signed Michael Vick:

“Number one, they would never do that.  I’d be very disappointed.  I’m not a big fan of his.  I know he can probably fit in somewhere, especially you talk about the Wildcat offense.  I think you have a guy like that, not just from that standpoint, but you could utilize him as a special-teamer, a punt return guy.  But I’ll put it this way — if I was the owner of the Buffalo Bills, I would not entertain an offer for Michael Vick.  I wouldn’t want him on my football team. “

  2. Could Jim Kelly’s reaction to Vick have anything to do with Vick not wanting to sign with his company when he came outta Virginia Tech?
