Freddy Sanchez On His 6-for-6 Piece Of Work
May 27, 2009 – 12:00 pm by Tas MelasI play slow pitch softball every summer – aka: I’m too old for baseball – and, when Freddy Sanchez states he had nothing going through his head in his 6-for-6 game versus the Cubbies, he’s speaking the truth. Hitters simply clear their mind and let the bat speak when things are going well. It sounds simple ‘cause it is. At least, I know that’s when I’m successful. The muscle memory has been perfected, you see the pitch, you hit it – over thinking throws the body off. So, why don’t these days happen more often? ‘Cause we all know it’s such an imperfect art – half an inch here, half an inch there, and Freddy could have been 0-for-6. That’s why these days are so rare. And, now, you’ve had your hypothetical hitting lesson for the day. Freddy Sanchez joined Fox 970 in Pittsburgh to discuss how the perfect day felt, what went through his head on each trip to the dish, and if his last hit should have been scored as such.
Should you have been credited a hit on the sixth one?
“I didn’t know for sure – I know it was a tough play for (Ryan) Theriot up the middle to make, but I didn’t know how they were gonna rule it, fortunately they ruled it in my favor. It was a tough play either way and it probably could have gone either way.”
What went through your mind as you approached the plate after the fourth and fifth hit?
“Nothing, just to try and keep getting hits. People were asking me, ‘Where you going for the triple?’ And, I said, ‘Beggars can’t be choosers.’ I’m just trying to be up there, get a hit, I didn’t care if it was a triple, a single, what it was, I was just trying to help us score some runs, and get a win. That’s all that was on my mind. That situation you just wanna keep it going and try to put some good wood on the ball and let everything take care of itself.”
How did it feel to get number six?
“It was crazy, it was a good feeling. It made it that much more special that we won the game. It was a tight battle with those guys, we went back and forth and it was just one of those deals where it just felt good to get that victory. And, the other guys were rooting for me in the dugout to get it.”
