Tim Hardaway Helps The Gay-Lesbian Community
May 29, 2009 – 7:45 am by Tas MelasIt’s unfortunate, but the way the world works today is that negative or sensational stories get a ton more pub than the do-good type news. Tim Hardaway is doing a heavy amount of awareness work with the gay and lesbian community in Miami , but he’s still remembered for anti-gay comments he made in the public eye over two years ago. One interview that occupied less than ten minutes of his life carries a lot more in the consciousness of people than several months of effort to right those words. He made a boo boo and he’s trying to rectify it. People will call it a cover up simply so that he can get back in the media’s good graces – that may be true, but the fact is he’s doing it and he didn’t have to. And, rumor has it, he would really love for the Miami Heat to retire his number. I’ll take the position that the man is growing as a person. Hardaway joined 790 The Zone in Atlanta to discuss how he’s trying to right his comments, whether or not he misses the game, and the former point guard picks his top three PG’s in the NBA.
How do you feel about the whole anti-gay mess?
“If my words can carry like that negatively, and people take it negatively like that, well I’m gonna come in and put it positively and say, ‘Look, let’s turn this around and say this is not the right thing to do.’ I made a mistake, yeah, I said it, I made a mistake. Where I come from in Chicago, if you say something or if you do something, you live up to it, you be a man about it, you try and correct it, and that’s what I’m doing.”
Do you miss playing?
“No, I don’t miss the game… I love watching the game, I’m a tutelage of the game. My son’s 16, I mean, 17 years old, he’s 6’6″, 6’7″, I’m being a father to him, but we watch the game and we learn from the games. And, I want him to really understand how to really play the games and what to do and what not to do.”
Who are your top three point guards today?
“Top three guards in the NBA today is definitely Chauncey Billups. Chauncey Billups is my number one guy. Number two is Chris Paul and number three to me is Jason Kidd. I’m talking about point guards. You know, because they come down and they understand what they need to do for their team. If your team needs a little bit of scoring, they score. If my team needs some defense, they’ll play defense…”
