Gary Kubiak Talks Cutler, Mario, and Playoffs
June 1, 2009 – 11:33 am by Will Brinson
Gary Kubiak’s a pretty underrated coach; the Houston Texans have been incredibly successful relative to their past and the impossibly difficult division that they’re playing in. So, yeah, props to Kubiak for building a decent team in Houston (and also for being the guy who coaches Mario Williams; that alone will score you some points in my book).
However, Gary also loses points because he has no man cave. Which is something he discussed in a recent interview with KILT. He also talked about having a rookie start at left tackle, why the Texans didn’t go after Jay Cutler when he was available recently and Mario Williams’ continued improvement.
Do you have a man cave?
“A man cave? Aw, I don’t know about that. Got a pool table, but I don’t think I’ve played but one time since we moved into the house, so maybe I’ll catch up this summer.”
On a rookie starting at left tackle?
“Well, I think [Dwayne Brown] struggled early, and we knew he would. When you play Vanden Bosch early in the season, Freeney early in the season, he played against Harrison on opening day in Pittsburgh. So he got inducted into the National Football League the tough way. But until you go through that, until you’ve been put in that situation, it’s tough to make the big jump. ”
On not making a run at Jay Cutler:
“I believe in Matt Schaub. First off, he’s a fine young man. He loves the game, he works extremely hard at it. The players respect him. When he’s been on the field he’s played as — I wanna say as good as the top 5 quarterbacks in the league. But he’s had a hard time staying on the field. I think that is something you learn to do, so I expect him to take a step in that direction this year.”
On expectations for the 2009 season:
“When I came here, obviously we had a long, long way to go. To be at a point right now where everyone’s so excited about the season, talking about us being a playoff team, us talking about expecting to be a playoff team — that’s why I came to Houston, that’s what I want to be a part of. That’s what I want this city to have and I want to be a big part of it also.”
On whether Mario Williams has peaked yet:
“Yeah, there’s no doubt, and I think there’s definitely some more steps that Mario’s got to take … Mario has so much confidence in what he’s doing. He’s working as hard, if not harder, than any player I’ve ever been around. And like you just said, Mario knows right now that he’s got more help than he’s ever had and the key to us getting better as a football team is us getting balanced on the defensive side of the ball so people have to pay attention to a lot of players and not just Mario himself.”
