Danny Ferry Has One More Chance

I think it’s pretty safe to say that if LeBron James does not win a championship next season, or at the very least come extremely close, he’ll be looking to move on from his hometown team.  Now, that’s purely speculation on my part, and may have something to do with this being a mourning period for the Cavs, but ‘Bron does not like being a loser… in anything.  I would think that seven seasons culminating in coming up short would be enough of a trial run for him.  Has Danny Ferry done enough for this team?  How can a team with the best overall record not be good enough?  Was it strictly a matchup problem with the Magic?  The matchup was definitely part of the problem and something Ferry will likely address before next year’s trade deadline as he has the big contract of Wally Szczerbiak coming off the books.  I think part of the blame has to go to Coach Mike Brown for a couple things.  First, his team was not playing at a high level after rolling through two rounds, and second, the team wasn’t ready for the Magic and the problems they cause.  Danny Ferry joined WKNR to discuss if this team was built to beat the Celtics, how good he feels to be the GM of this team, and whether or not this season was a disappointment.

Would you call this season disappointing?

“We didn’t achieve our ultimate goal, we wanted to win a championship… It’s truly heartbreaking, disappointed, whatever it is, ’cause you feel like you could have, if things unfolded the right way, it could get done.  That being said, I’m proud of our group, it’s a good group that worked really hard, a group that represented our organization, represented northeast Ohio extremely well… I feel good about it, but at the same time it makes the hunger even deeper for next year of having that ultimate goal happen.”

Was this team built upon the idea that you had to beat the Celtics?

“This team was built on looking at the best teams but it was also built on what opportunities were out there that fit with who we wanna be and how we wanna play… At the end of the day, we weren’t playing with a rhythm like Orlando was, and Orlando made some shots.  I mean, we’re up a couple points with eight seconds to go in two of the games.  They made plays; they played at an extremely high level the whole series.”

How do you feel going in to the offseason?

“We’re in good situation.  We have a very good basketball team, we have a very good coaching staff.  There are 95% of teams at least that would trade positions with the seat I’m in right now, with the group that we have right now.  It’s a good group, a young group overall as well.  We’ll find opportunities, we’ll find ways to get better, we have between now and February to put together a team that can make a playoff run and hopefully put this organization in the best possible position to get those bounces that make championships happen.”
