Trevor Hoffman Remains Perfect

No Rickie Weeks? No Ben Sheets or CC Sabathia anymore? No problem. The Milwaukee Brewers are playing solid baseball to start the 2009 season and closer Trevor Hoffman is a big reason why. The baseball season is just about a week into its third month and former longtime closer for the San Diego Padres, Trevor Hoffman, is a perfect 14 of 14 in save opportunities. Not only that, the future Hall of Famer and all time saves leader has not yet been scored on in 16 innings this year. Hoffman carried his 0.00 ERA and 15:1 K:BB ratio with him to Florida on Thursday before heading to Atlanta for a three-game set with the Braves beginning Friday evening. He also joined WSSP in Milwaukee to talk about the succes he’s enjoying, the promising future of the Brewers, and what he might tell Jake Peavy – a potential trade candidate for Milwaukee – about the organization.
On the rock-star like treatment Hoffman is getting from the Milwaukee fans, something that was reserved last year for just the great C.C. Sabathia:
“I’m very humbled by it. But to try to put it on the same level as what C.C. did and ultimately taking the club and the franchise up over what they need to accomplish last year was huge, and it’s kind of hard to compare to that. I feel like I’ve made an impact, I’ve fit in nicely with the bullpen and stabilized some things. But we’re winning really because it’s been a group effort…”
On what he would tell former Padres teammate Jake Peavy about Milwaukee in an attempt to help the Brewers land the ace right-hander:
“Well, there’s a lot of positives. There’s a culture that’s been developing over the last couple of years, it’s not just a dreary situation. It’s a great young ballclub that’s predicated on winning year after year. It’s not just a one-year deal or something that’s going to be short-lived. The energy that is in the stadium night after night, it’s pretty special…For Jake Peavy to be talked about, it’s something that the fans should be really proud of themselves. Because by them turning out, it allows for this organization to look at people like that.”
