Arizona Cardinals To Have Multiple Coaches Calling Plays

June 10, 2009 – 7:00 am by Michael Bean

I’ve never heard of anything like this before – the Arizona Cardinals intend to shuffle the play-calling duties between Assistant head coach Russ Grimm and Mike Miller. Grimm will be calling the running plays, while Miller will be in charge of the passing game. Hmm, I’m curious to see how this one works? Surely one of them would have to be up in the skybox, no? Do they alternate who barks the instructions in to the quarterback? Enough speculating, I guess. Let’s just hear from Russ Grimm himself. He joined KTAR in Phoenix to talk about the interesting arrangement.

On what extra responsibilities Grimm will be assuming now that he’s been named the rushing game coordinator:

“It’s basically going to be putting the run game together with Coach Miller and the passing game. And you know, building a game plan sheet and getting it ready and obviously [Whisenhunt] will be looking at all of it.”

On how the Cardinals can improve their running game now that they’ve added Chris Beanie Wells in the draft:

“You got to practice it. You have to get better at certain things and you got to rep it. I mean, the more reps you get on certain runs, the backs get a better feel for it, the line can make the adjustments a little bit easier, but you’ve got have that mindset going in and say hey is this a team we feel we can run the ball against or this a team we feel we can take our shots against in the passing game and then come to the running game and eat the clock up. So, it kind of goes back and forth. We’re pretty gifted at the skill positions so you can’t just necessarily keep those guys on the sideline for too long.”
