Joe Buck Has a New Show — Did You Hear? It’s Live!
June 15, 2009 – 8:00 am by Will Brinson
I guess there’s a chance that Joe Buck’s new television show might be kind of funny — I mean, you can’t possibly get to where he is without being a tad bit humorous, right? Well, unless you have a famous dad or something — then you could probably get away with becoming famous based simply on having a decent voice.
But regardless of how I feel about the guy, Joe Buck’s still popular and he’s going to have his own show on HBO, called “Joe Buck Live” (how apropos!) And he got on the phone with Tony Bruno recently to talk about his upcoming show (which is apparently only four times a year, WTF.) Additionally, Joe chatted about baseball, but the show stuff, obviously, is much more interesting.
On how many takes there will be per show:
“You know, I have not read the fine print of my contract, but I believe — yeah, we’re only doing it once. I’ve only got one bullet and I’m firing it at 9pm Eastern.”
On what the show’s about:
“It’s gonna be a combination of sports and entertainment. I’m taking over for Bob Costas, who is a legend in this business and has a very unique style and just by taking over his show and being a different person, it’s going to be different. He was very hard-hitting with interviews, which I plan to be within in the interview itself, but I think we’re going to add more often shock and awe and funniness and entertainment around those interviews. So it’ll be a little bit of everything.”
On the variety of what could happen:
“The funny thing is — the show we’re talking about on Monday isn’t going to be that different. I’m going to talk to people in the crowd — obviously this being the 21st century we’ll have an internet component; Twitter, everyone’s got a Twitter in this world now … Eh, I’m fighting [live show Tweeting], I’m fighting that, and if anything I think we’ll have an extended half hour on HBO.com or something.”
On if it’s a weekly show:
“No, this is four times a year … Yeah, dude, I have a job. This we’re going to sprinkle in four specials a year, maybe we’ll do five, maybe we’ll do six — if I suck, maybe we’ll do one.”
On the possibility of a one and done:
“Yeah, absolutely. I don’t know if this is the Conan O’Brien experience where I’m getting 10-day extensions on a contract, but I feel the pressure. Here’s the other thing — if the show does indeed suck, I have to chew on that until the third week in September, when our next show is scheduled … If I have a bad show on Monday, I’ve got months until I come back.”
