Luke Harangody: I Wouldn’t Mind Being A Kid For One More Year
June 18, 2009 – 12:10 pm by Tas MelasThe deadline to pull out of the draft has come and gone and just before it passed, Notre Dame’s Luke Harangody took his name out of the hat. Labeled as a Tyler Hansbrough type, Harangody is a skilled big who can score, but he’s undersized at a listed 6′7″ or 6′8″ and measured out close to 6′6″.. His name was coming up as a late first rounder who could easily slip in to the non-guaranteed contract realm of round number two. Going back to school for his senior only makes sense for him – not only will he get better, but he’ll have a chance to dominate on a higher ranked team with so many of his competitors getting picked in next Thursday’s draft. Harangody joined 1070 The Fan to discuss what he would have missed at Notre Dame, what he’ll be gaining by going back, and where he sees the Fighting Irish finishing this coming season.
Take us through how you made your decision to return to the draft:
“To talk to everybody and get a lot of feedback, in the end I decided that college isn’t always gonna be there, and I had one year left, and I wanted to take advantage of that… Basketball and school and just being a kid again just sounded too good… What drew me to Notre Dame was the people at the university, my teammates, it’s just a great environment.”
What do you think will make you a better player next year?
“There’s not a lot of specifics I need to work on. Myself as a player, it’s just more of a, me to get ready at the next level. Just as a position of being more experienced, I think.”
How do you feel about Notre Dame’s chances next season?
“We definitely have a good chance. This year, as you talked about, those teams losing kind of their key players, kind of more wide open. And, we definitely fit the team that could finish up there in the top four, I think we have a great chance at winning the Big East too.”
