Rex Grossman Talks New Beginnings In Houston

June 18, 2009 – 9:45 am by Michael Bean

Rex Grossman has finally been release from his misery in the Windy City. For as easy as it is to make fun of Sexy Rexy, he really did have some success in the city of Chicago. He did, after all, have a winning record as a starting quarterback and led the Bears to the Super Bowl in 2006 where they lost the Colts in Super Bowl XLI. Nevertheless, the Bears decided to go in a different direction and that’s probably a good thing in the long run for Grossman. He probably was never going to get a fair shake there from the organization or its fans. He did however get picked up by the Houston Texans. Sure, Houston has Matt Schaub entrenched at quarterback for now, but he’s had some problems staying on the field in his career. Grossman joined KILT in Houston to talk about the waiting game he had to go through this offseason while waiting to be acquired, the end of his tenure in Chicago, and what he’s expecting for 2009.

On his thoughts on getting to work with the Texans offense prior to training camp opening up in about a month’s time:

“I definitely accelerated my learning curve getting a chance to get some reps two days after I got the playbook, so that was interesting, never done that before. But I definitely think it’s going to help. I got six weeks to really study the fine points of the playbook and then hopefully I’ll be ready to go for training camp and be able to understand it and be ready to roll.”

On whether he was ever nervous about finding a new home as a free agent this offseason:

“Well, you know, I figured I’d probably end up somewhere but I mean, you never know. So I was nervous. I felt like I was going to get picked up by the first week or two of free agency and it took five months or four months or whatever. So, it was a tough period of uncertainty and all that but I’m thrilled to be on a team and to resurrect my career.”

On how Chicago treated him despite leading them to a Super Bowl and having a winning record as a starting quarterback.

“It went south real quickly for several reasons. We didn’t play well as a team the year after the Super Bowl – we kind of had a Super Bowl slump. You know, I didn’t play real well and our whole team didn’t so they decided to make a change early in that season. And things really haven’t been the same for the Chicago Bears as a whole the last couple of years. But you know, I choose to remember the good times – we won an NFC Championship at Soldier Field. I was like 19-11 as a starter or something like that so I won a lot of games and had so many great memories so I’m just going to remember those and not all the adversity that had to go along with it.”
