[...] Broderick Turner, L.A. Times: "[Kurt] Rambis, after picking up dinner, said he had been aware that [Phil] Jackson is open to the idea of having Rambis coach some road games next season in his place and that Jackson will make a decision on his coaching future in early July. ‘This is not new to me,’ Rambis, who was one of the final candidates for the Sacramento Kings head coaching job, said late Tuesday night. ‘This is one of the many ideas we kicked around a little. The hardest part about the job is the travel. It’s especially hard when you have physical issues. There’s some travel that are particularly grueling. He can take tough road trips off. Phil is probably at a point where he is looking to wind his career down and I’m looking to wind my career up.’ Rambis said the idea is to keep Jackson healthy for the long run and physically fit so the Lakers have a better chance at defending the championship they just won. ‘Everybody benefits,’ Rambis said. ‘Phil remains fresh without having the season and the travel wear him down. It gives me valuable coaching experience. What the future holds beyond Phil, I don’t know. But this keeps continuity of what we’re doing, what we do defensively and offensively.’" [listen] [...]

It certainly is a good idea for Phil Jackson to coach only home games - maybe some away games if they're close enough to home. He'll be watching those games he's not coaching and you can be sure he'll have his say one way or another - phone, tex mail. He'll defend the champship however that is done. Gooc Luck Mr Jackson. E.

A great idea. Keeps continuity. Phil is still in the system with a finger on the pulse, and Kirt is groomed into the job. This is easiest on the players instead of taking Phil out of the loop altogether. It will be like having two head coaches guiding the team that the players know and are familiar with. It also tests the players' ability to handle challenges on their own, a mark of a champion team. This is the best scenario for a chance at a repeat or dominating the NBA for a few years.

If it was a choice between losing Phil and keeping him part time, I'd say part time.

This is easiest on the players instead of taking Phil out of the loop altogether. It will be like having two head coaches guiding the team that the players know and are familiar with. It also tests the players’ ability to handle challenges on their own, a mark of a champion team. This is the best scenario for a chance at a repeat or dominating the NBA for a few years.

If it was a choice between losing Phil and keeping him part time, I’d say part time.
