Lucas Glover Discusses Some Golf Tournament He Won This Weekend

June 24, 2009 – 9:00 am by Will Brinson

Lucas Glover was a surprising US Open winner, for sure. I mean, unless you work for the New York Times, in which case I humbly bow down to you. But, yeah, everyone was surprised that he won, given the way that David Duval and Phil Mickelson played all weekend and the stories that surrounded those two for so long.

So Glover, the new US Open champ — and a damn fine golfer I should add — sat down with Mike and Mike to discuss his new status and the weekend that was at Bethpage Black.

Did he think “I’m winning the Open” at any point:

“Absolutely not. There was too much going on and too many guys up there close. Phil was making a charge and Ricky was right there and Duval was making birdies and I had to stay focused. You lose your focus on that golf course, it’s a double — or worse — waiting to happen.”

On having a two stroke lead coming in:

“It’s just, you’ve got a little bit more margin of error. One of the two holes if you get in trouble you can play for bogey instead of being aggressive with a chip or a crazy iron shot out of a bunker. You’ve just got a little leeway to be conservative and you can play for bogey if you have to.”

On Ricky Barnes and their in-tournament chatter:

“Well, we’ve known each other since high school years. We played junior golf and amateur golf and college golf together. So we just talked about how each other’s families were, but after the first few holes you don’t talk much about anything but golf … Small talk and chit-chat, but again, we had a good time together the last two rounds, we’ve known each other a long time.”

On what it means to win the US Open:

“Well, obviously, it’s a great, uh, career move. [Overlaughs all around!] It’s a dream come true — and that’s the truth. You dream about winning golf tournaments as a kid and it just happened to be a big one. So, just a dream come true and I’m just so happy and excited. But hopefully I can use it as a springboard for better things — more wins and and more motivation to get better. So that’s the mindset right now.”
