Let The Circus Continue In Big D: Leonard Davis And His Boys Get Record Deal
June 26, 2009 – 7:15 am by Michael BeanThey say that the only things in life that are certain are death and taxes. What about distractions in Big D for members of the Dallas Cowboys? From Jerry Jones to the now departed T.O, Hard Knocks last season to Michael Irvin’s reality show at training camp this summer. Seems to me that the Dallas Cowboys have a pretty solid track record expending as much unnecessary energy as possible on efforts not related to winning actual football games. The latest? Cowboys offensive linemen Leonard Davis (bass), Marc Colombo (lead vocals) and Cory Proctor (backup vocals/guitar), along with one of Davis’ friends, have been signed to a record deal. The band is called Free Reign and they have signed a deal with Riot Entertainment, an Australian heavy metal outfit.
In all actuality, there’s not too much to criticize or be worried about here – I just happen to be a fan of the Steelers and thus loathe just about everything Dallas Cowboys. But Davis is clearly a good guy and you have to tip your cap to him and his teammates/friends for their interest in something outside of the game of football as well as their accomplishment inking a deal with a reputable music distribution company like Riot.
Davis joined ESPN Radio in Dallas to talk about the band, what the new deal with Riot entails and how they plan to fit in their musical endeavors around the rigors of a 12-month NFL season.
On if they are truly a heavy metal band or if they just get that moniker because of how ridiculously large three of the four band members are:
“I think it’s a little bit of both. We do play some heavy metal music but there’s other styles of music we’re capable of playing….But the size, that’s kind of how we got the heavy metal label so I’m kind of excited about that, that gets me fired up.”
On if Free Rain’s style is more Metallica, Pantera, or some other well known metal band:
“I would say we’re more Metallica but I’d say we’re probably a little bit of both because I know that Justin [Davis's friend that's in the band but not on the Cowboys], he really likes Metallica. And Marc, he likes Metallica too, but he’s a Pantera fan too so I think it’s probably a little bit of both.”
On if the band will be touring or playing many shows during the football season:
“No we won’t be touring during the season. We may have one or two shows during the season but it will be on our day off, so you know, it won’t really have an effect on what we have to do on the field.”
On if Coach Wade Phillips enjoys their music:
“He actually enjoys our music just because it’s us and it’s somebody he knows.”
