Bart Scott Comes Back to Baltimore to Talk Michael Jackson

June 30, 2009 – 9:15 am by Will Brinson

Bart Scott was a long-time Baltimore Raven who is no longer with the team, because he headed up north to the New York Jets. Whatever, he’s partnering up with former coordinator Rex Ryan, so it’s all good I guess.

And Scott still loves his B-more, because he’s apparently living there anyway and also helping out with some local charities. In other words, Bart Scott rules because he cares about his city. And because he likes Michael Jackson (what can I say, I’m a sucker) which he talks about in a recent interview, as well as the change from Baltimore to New York and his status as a “superstar.”

On his favorite song:

“I like more of the dance stuff — “Pretty Young Thing.”

On Michael Jackson’s death:

“I think it’s a tragedy, no matter what it is. You know, he had some controversy like most geniuses have, you can go back to Rick James, Elvis, everyone had demons. But the music and pure genius — I think he was one of the innovators of the music game.”

On being a superstar because of his salary:

“Oh really? I never got the memo that I’d moved up from slacker status, thank you … Oh wow, this interview’s over! I’m out of here then! [Laughter] It’s just not me — I’m always humble person. No matter how many accolades I get I never forget where I come from and my purpose, and my purpose is try and come in and change lives. The only thing you can take with you is your legacy — no matter how good or bad I do, I try to stand for something. And people can respect you a lot more when you stand for something.”

On sicking the dogs (literally) on Rex Ryan:

Of course not [I didn't know] — I wouldn’t have had the dogs at on my future employers; I didn’t want them to change my mind … I’ve got German Shepheds … Thankfully they stopped [knocking] before that visible sense … Nah, I just heard the dogs barking — they’ve got a different bark if they’re chasing a fox or chasing a deer around. That was the “I’m about to bite somebody” bark … Well, you know, it was just a tremendous night; things didn’t work out [in Baltimore], I’d hoped they would, but they didn’t, and I’m ready for a new chapter in my career. But that being said, I’ll always have love — you only have one first girlfriend, so to speak, you always remember the first. So I’ll take this opportunity to tell the Baltimore community that I’ve always appreciated all the support they’ve given me.”
