Joey Chestnut and Crazy Legs Conti Preview Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest on Mike and Mike
July 1, 2009 – 10:44 am by BunkNathan’s Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest. It’s as American as apple pie and it takes place every 4th of July in Coney Island, New York. If you ever tune in to the World Wide Leader, you’ve probably seen clips of Japanese competitive eating sensation Kobayashi, but there’s other players on the scene. Lots of them. Two of the stars of competitive eating, Joey Chestnut and Crazy Legs Conti, as well as the President of Major League Eating joined Mike & Mike on ESPN Radio to talk about the so called Super Bowl of Major League Eating. Among the subjects discussed were defending champion Chestnut’s aspirations to beat the world record of 66 hot dogs eaten in 12 minutes, what goes in to preparing for an event and how many people will descend upon the area to either participate or merely watch the famous contest.
Joey Chestnut on his goals for this year’s competition:
“My goal is to always beat world records so I’m trying to break the 12 minute record in 10 minutes. If I could get 67, that’d be wonderful. I’ve done practices where I’ve been in the mid to upper 60s so it’s possible if the conditions are right, if the hot dogs are cooked right, if the weather’s not killing me and it’s not too humid, but I’m hoping my body cooperates.”
Crazy Legs Conti on Chestnut’s chances of breaking the record:
“I think he can. I think humidity is going to be the focus factor because the buns are going to be essential for him to dunk and be able to go. So I think weather conditions – he’s obviously going to be pushed by Kobayashi – they’re two great athletes that have won this contest before so it is poetry in motion. But as you know Golic, I’ll be at the far end of the table doing a paltry 25.”
Chestnut on how he feels after an event has been completed:
“I don’t get to be free for a couple hours. I’m signing autographs and taking pictures with fans. About two hours later I finally get back to the hotel room and crash and fall asleep because going in to the contest I haven’t eaten solid food in several days.”
Chestnut on the preparation necessary:
“Thursday I stop eating solid food. In the morning, I’ll drink a gallon of water and a half gallon of milk to stretch my stomach and all the muscles around my stomach. And then making sure I’m absolutely empty by the day of the contest.”
