Chris Pronger: I Didn’t Want To Be Traded
July 7, 2009 – 10:45 am by Tas MelasThis seems like a match made in the hockey heavens. I’m sure any of the ‘Broad Street Bullies’ would look at this signing like Michael Jackson’s glove – a perfect fit (couldn’t help myself). Pronger is one of this SOB’s everyone hates to play against, but when he’s lining up along side you on the blueline, it makes you feel just a little more comfortable. The city of Philadelphia will absolutely love this guy; I’m pretty sure no one is arguing that right now. At 34 years of age, it seems like Prongs has been around forever, but with the way he’s maintained his level play, it also seems like he’ll be around a whole lot longer. Pronger joined ESPN Radio in Philadelphia to discuss if he was expecting to be traded, his new number, if he thinks he’s lost a step, and whether or not he’d like to sign a long-term deal with the Flyers.
After the season, was it a foregone conclusion you’d be traded out of Anaheim?
“I don’t necessarily think it was a foregone conclusion – I think they had business issues to deal with, they had payroll, and budget demands, and things of that nature that they needed to get under control. You know, I was the one that they could get the most value for and that could solve their problems within their budget. I understand that, that’s the business side of the game. Did I want to go? No, but I’m coming to a great young team and hopefully a part of something bigger.”
On if he’s lost a step in a certain part of his game:
“To be honest with you, it’s not not being able to do it, it’s doing it smarter. It’s doing it on the lighter shade of gray between the rules (laughs). I don’t feel like my game has slipped at all – it’s really just as they’ve changed the rules, and adapting and finding different ways to intermingle within the rules.”
What number will you be wearing this season?
“Number 20. (Host: Why 20?) My dad was number 20 back home for the Dryden Rockets in the senior league. So, I figured I’d change it up again; last time I changed my number I won a cup, so I figured I’d do it again.”
Would you think about signing a long-term deal with the Flyers?
“Absolutely, absolutely. We’d love to. I’ve been looking around the area, love it, and looking forward to playing.”
