Jeff Fisher: I’m Proud To Have Been A Part Of McNair’s Legacy
July 7, 2009 – 9:45 am by Tas MelasSteve McNair’s former coach in Tennessee, Jeff Fisher, held a press conference to say a few words about the man who was shot and killed last weekend. People always seem to remember only the good things when a person passes, and it’s refreshing to hear Fisher not only touch on those, but also mention that McNair made a mistake. That makes Fisher real. Mistakes are a part of life, and obviously, pro athletes are not immune to them. Through all the words circulating the last few days, McNair seemed like a great individual, and Fisher echoes those sentiments below in his press conference. Fisher spoke about what McNair would have said if he could talk to his family and friends today, McNair’s legacy, and what Steve did for the city of Nashville.
On what McNair would say if he could speak right now:
“The Steve that I knew, if he were here right know, would say ‘Mechelle I love you. Tyler, Trent, Steve, and Junior – I love you.’ That’s what he would want me to say. The Steve McNair that I knew would want me to say, ‘Sorry, I’m not perfect. We all make decisions sometimes that are not in our best interests. Please forgive me.’ The Steve McNair that I knew would want me to say, ‘Celebrate my life, for what I did on the field, for what I did in the community, the kind of teammate that I was.”
On his hopes for Steve’s legacy:
“My hope is that Steve will remembered, and also forgiven. But, remembered for what he did and what he meant to this organization. My hope is that we can get past the circumstances… And, we can focus on the type of player, person that he was.”
On what Steve did for Tennessee:
“He was a great person. Along with these teammates here, he put this organization on the map here in Tennessee. Put us in our first Super Bowl… I ask you to honor what he did on the field, and in the community, what he was as a tremendous teammate. That is his legacy, and I’m proud to have been a part of it.”
