Joe Mauer On The All-Star Game, Beatboxing, And The Yankees
July 10, 2009 – 10:30 am by Tas MelasWhen I think of Joe Mauer, I think of greatness, I think of a gun behind the plate, I think of a wicked 1-2 combo of Joe back-to-back with Morneau. As Jim Leyland said this week, Morneau and Mauer are likely the best back-to-back duo in baseball. As a fan of both the game and the survival of small to mid-market teams, I’d like to see Mauer stay in Minny long-term. When your contract expires next season, just sign on, would ya, Joe? No one would blame him if he bounced to a bigger town to make bigger bucks, but it’s just tough to see talented guys leave because of the green. It seems inevitable that it’ll happen that way, but I’d like to see the duo try and make it work for as long as they can together. Mauer joined KFAN in Minnesota to discuss his love for beat boxing, the Twins’ battles with the Yanks, and his favorite part of the All-Star game.
On losing to the Yankees:
“I don’t know. I think we went on to New York, I think we were in every game, one run game or so. The ball just didn’t really shake our way. We’ve been in every game except for the first one. We’re playing them tough, we just haven’t come out on top… To face Sabathia and Burnett on back to back nights make for a couple tough nights. Last night we were right there, we had chances to win the ballgame, we just left some guys on base and couldn’t get the job done.”
His favorite part of the All-Star game:
“It’s a crazy couple of days but just being in the clubhouse with that amount of talent. Just sitting there, getting dressed and looking around, you see guys like the Ichiros and the Jeters. Then you get out on the field and there’s Pujols and guys like that one the other side. Everybody is out there, they’re having a good time. It’s just a great event… I think everybody kind of checks their egos at the door. They get into the clubhouse and realize they’re not the only superstar or great player in the clubhouse, so they kind of let their hair down a bit and that’s kind of nice to see.”
On the Yahoo story about his beatboxing:
“I don’t know how that got out there, I think that’s Cuddyer that’s starting this whole thing. We did a couple years, just messing around with a couple buddies, but I’m no good by any means.”
