Jordan Farmar From The 2009 World Series Of Poker

July 14, 2009 – 12:02 pm by Michael Bean

Every year, thousands of people throw down $10,000 in hopes of winning the Main Event of the World Series Of Poker. This year, 6,494 threw their name (and their money) in to the middle in hopes of winning The Big One. One such player was Los Angeles Lakers guard Jordan Farmar. He joined KLAC in Los Angeles to talk about his experience playing the WSOP (he made it through two days but failed to survive a third day) and to answer a few questions about the Los Angeles Lakers in the wake of their World Championship.

On the WSOP:

“Games are a little bit more difficult to deal with but it’s a lot of fun, I’m having a good time…You have something that’s decent and you want to play it and then someone raises you $15,000 and you’re like, “Man! I just wasted my $1,000 coming in there.” So yeah that’s how it goes, just really being patient and waiting until you get something good and then striking…If I feel like I have something good and someone challenges me, I’m going to call you on it every time.”

On signing Ron Artest and losing Trevor Ariza

“I think it’s really unfortunate we can’t play with Trevor anymore. I grew up with Trevor, with him and against him. He was huge in our championship run. Young, talented guy turning over in the right direction at the turn of his career. Me personally, I wish him the best in Houston. I hope he gets the opportunity. But I also think we got a very good player in Ron Artest who is proven, who is extremely tough, going to play defense every night, going to make us a much tougher defensive team and has the ability to score the ball. I think he is coming over here with the right mentality that he’s trying to help us continue doing what we’re going. I don’t think there’s going to be animosity or [confusion] about who is in charge and whose team it is or anything like that. I think he’s just going to be one of the guys and contribute to this team.”

On where things stand with the organization resigning Lamar Odom:

“To be honest, I haven’t been keeping up on negotiations. I don’t know what they’ve offered and anything like that. I know what Lamar is worth and it’s pretty much invaluable. He can be one of the top 5 guys in the NBA if he got on a team and was their go-to guy and they just let everything run through him. He’s sacrificed so much already for this team. I don’t know what the deal is now. He has to look out for him and his family and get something that’s fair for him in terms of what he’s worth. You always want to feel like you’re getting what you’re worth.”

On the competition at the starting point guard position in Los Angeles now that Ron Artest has been signed:

“I think competition is healthy and it’ll make us all work and keep us sharp. We’re going to be a dangerous team again…I’ve been trying to [earn the starting role] since day one so nothing changes in my journey and my struggle and my battle trying to make it where I think I should be. I’m just going to continue to work and hopefully it falls in my favor.”
