DeWayne Wise: By Far, The Best Catch I’ve Ever Made
July 27, 2009 – 7:45 am by Tas MelasI’ve watched DeWayne Wise’s catch which saved Mark Buehrle’s perfect game over and over and I still can’t believe it. In my opinion, great catches in baseball can start looking identical after a while, but those ones against the wall are perfection in and of themselves. There isn’t another way to describe Wise’s snag, really. The defensive replacement comes in and makes a grab people will watch for a long time. DeWayne Wise won’t be remembered for much on the baseball field, but he will be remembered for his glove, and for that leap. Wise joined WSCR to discuss the catch, if it means more because of his rocky season, and how much he feels a part of history.
On the play:
“It was crazy ’cause I think I hit the wall and the ball hit the glove kinda at the same time, and, I really didn’t know I caught it until I was just falling down and the ball started to slip out my glove, and that’s when I reached down with my left hand and barehanded it.”
Did you have a good beat on it right away?
“Right when the ball was hit, I put my head down, I wanted to clear some ground, when I looked up, I knew that I was gonna have a shot at catching it. I was just glad it hung in the air long enough for me to get there and make the catch.”
Does this mean more because of the tough season you’ve had?
“It’s one of those things where you look back and you’re like, ‘Man, I’ve been through so much this year.’ These guys have stuck with me and now I got the opportunity yesterday to go out there and be a part of history, it’s just a great feeling.”
Do you feel like your fingerprints have been imprinted on history?
“Yeah, just ’cause the circumstances of the game. You know, if I don’t catch that ball, it’s a 5-1 game, no-hitter’s gone, perfect game’s gone, so due to the circumstances it’s by far the best catch I’ve ever made. I’m glad I was able to be a part of it.”
